Summer Institute for After-School Youth Workers - Child and Youth Care Basic Course
Intensive Training delivered by a partnership of APOST (Allegheny Partners for Out-of-School Time) and The
University of Pittsburgh School of Education
The Third Annual Child & Youth Care Basic Course, the Summer Institute, was held at the University of Pittsburgh this past summer sponsored by The United Way of Allegheny County. Practitioners in after-school from across the region, community leaders, students, and trainers came together to learn and develop as child and youth care workers through lectures, interactive exercises, guest speakers, group dynamics, and a visit to the Pittsburgh Project. Six child and youth care competencies (professional practice, relationships, communication, documentation, guidance, and developmental
practice) were covered in eight days in the beginning of June.
The Institute was led by visiting Associate Professor Andy Munoz and Frank Eckles, President of the National Certification Board. Six Pittsburgh Afterschool Youth Workers took the rigorous national exam to become certified.
The trainers all had special and unique experience in the field of child and youth work. Each trainer’s area of expertise created a well-rounded wealth of knowledge for each practitioner. The interactive learning activities expanded the wealth of knowledge by including the practitioners’ current experiences with children and youth.
The overall goal of the Summer Institute was to change a child’s life through application of knowledge and strategies from the course and to strengthen consistent quality for afterschool programs. It was a great opportunity to bring experts in the field of child and youth work together to share strategies for change in our community as we work to insure children and youth succeed.
